The Record: SJAM Student Breaks Record --- But it Doesn't Count
By Mark Bryson, Record staff
KITCHENER — With his younger brother Nik cheering him on, Alex Hoediono took one final deep breath and began his sprint down the runway.
Seconds later, he planted and was on his way up.
Way up.
Before you could say Hoediono, it was all over. He had landed in the pit, flat on his back, and was looking up at the bar he had just cleared. The 4.61-metre jump had just eclipsed the Central Western Ontario senior boys pole vault record by one centimetre.
The Sir John A. Macdonald Grade 12 student smiled and then shook his head in mock disgust.
It had been his fourth attempt at breaking the 1981 record, so it didn’t count. An athlete only gets three attempts to set a mark, so this was just a case of Hoediono proving to himself he could do it. The 4.60 record set by Eastwood’s Ed Koschewitz was safe for another year.
“At least now I know that I can do it. Actually, I know I can go higher than that,” he said. “It’s just a matter of such small, little adjustments.
“But you have to do it when it counts and I didn’t. Next time I will be more focussed.”
Still, Hoediono, 18, was focussed when it mattered most and that was during the final stages of his two-man battle with Paul Worndl of St. Mary’s. Hoediono was one jump away from bowing out at 4.20 metres but managed to stay alive. Worndl did the same thing on his final jump at 4.30 metres, forcing the bar up another 10 centimetres.
Hoediono cleared 4.40 by a good bit on his first attempt while Worndl came up short on three tries.
While one Hoediono was unable to set a CWOSSA mark, another one—little brother Nik—made it happen in the morning. It was one of the highlights on the second and final day of competition at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.
After handily defeating the competition in the junior boys pole vault, Nik Hoediono jumped 4.12 metres to erase the 4.09 record set by Eastwood’s Dave Woodley in 1978.
A pretty big deal, right?
Well, not exactly.
“It’s just a record. The records challenge me but I should be jumping higher. I only increased it by a little bit,” said the 15-year-old, Grade 10 student. “But it’s good to put it in our name, the Hoediono name.”
It was the younger Hoediono’s second record performance in consecutive weeks. At last week’s Waterloo County event at the same location, he beat the record of, you guessed it, his older brother.
“He’s all right with me breaking his records because at least it’s me doing it and not somebody else,” said Nik Hoediono.
Big brother agreed.
“I don’t care if he breaks my records because I think he’s awesome,” said Alex Hoediono.
Both are quick with a joke and take a loosey-goosey approach to their sport. Yet when it comes to SJAM coach James Sniatenchuk, the brothers put on a straight face.
“Nik and I wouldn’t be anywhere without Mr. Sniatenchuk,” said Alex.
“He’s a great coach,” added Nik. “He’s always got great advice and he’s always helping me out.”
The close-knit and confident brothers will continue to push each other in the days ahead as they prepare for next week’s Ontario West regional championship in Windsor. Both are hoping for first-place performances and believe more records are possible.
“I think I’m capable of doing anything. I just haven’t done it yet,” said Alex Hoediono.
Others also turned in excellent meets, including Nienkel Paljola of Forest Heights. Competing in the junior boys division, he won the 200, 400 and triple jump before running a leg of 49.8 seconds to lead the Trojans to a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay.
Elmira’s Emeka Agada won the senior boys 100-metre race in a time of 10.91 seconds, his first-ever high school win over Devon Rittinger of Forest Heights, who finished in 10.97.
“I’m just really excited,” said a smiling Agada. “I guess today was my day. As soon as I passed him I was like—hah—jumping for joy.”
Jaimie Phelan of St. Mary’s set another midget girls record, this time in the 800-metre run. Rockway’s Connor Outhit also recorded an impressive win over 800 metres to go along with his 1,500-metre win.
Calvin Arsenault of St. Mary’s won his second senior boys hurdles event and Jill Van Damme of Bluevale won the senior girls shot put and discus events.
First-place finishers on Thursday:
Tegan Sauer, FHCI, midget girls 100 metres; Bailey Sprout, RCSS, midget girls 200 metres; Jaimie Phelan, midget girls 800 metres; Ben Flanagan, SMHS, midget boys 3,000 metres; Megan Parsons, HHSS, midget girls 300-metre hurdles; Jordan Sherwood, CHCI, midget boys 300-metre hurdles; Jenny Carrique, GRCI, junior girls 100 metres; Nienkel Paljola, FHCI, junior boys 200 metres; Scott Buttinger, RCSS, junior boys 800 metres; James Milton, SDCSS, junior boys 3,000 metres; Matt Cober, HHSS, junior boys 300-metre hurdles; Emeka Agada, EDSS, senior boys 100 metres; Tia Semplonius, SBCSS, senior girls 200 metres; Devon Rittinger, FHCI, senior boys 200 metres; Katie Phelan, SMHS, midget girls 800 metres; Connor Outhit, RMC, senior boys 800 metres; Calvin Arsenault, SMHS; senior boys 400-metre hurdles; Bluevale, 4x400 boys open relay; Jess Authier, SJAM, midget girls high jump; Braden Cok, SJAM, midget boys high jump; Nik Hoediono, SJAM, junior boys pole vault; Jessica Clancy, WCI, junior girls long jump; David Nightingale, WCHS, junior boys high jump; Breanne Hutchings, MDCSS, junior girls shot put; Marvin Muschette, RCSS, senior boys triple jump; Jill Van Damme, BCI, senior girls discus; Alex Hoediono, SJAM, senior boys pole vault; Cory Giroux, EDSS, senior boys long jump; Jill Van Damme, BCI, senior girls shot put; Braden Cok, SJAM; midget boys triple jump.

Guelph Mercury: Slim Win For Cornwall
Article By: Rob Massey
KITCHENER — The difference between first and second in 100 metres races can often be miniscule.
Such was the case Thursday when Karry-Ann Cornwall of Ross won the senior girls’ final at the CWOSSA high school track and field championship meet at Resurrection high school in Kitchener.
“It went pretty good, apparently I had a pretty good time,” Cornwall said before seeing her clocking for the race. “If I had a better start, it could have been better, but I’m happy with it.”
Cornwall edged Tia Semplonius of Cambridge St. Benedict for the win. Cornwall finished in 12.57 seconds, Semplonius in 12.58.
“Tia and I, we’ve been like that all the time,” Cornwall said. “I’m pretty happy I stayed with her.”
The two were also close in the 200m final, Semplonius winning in 25.90 seconds while runner-up Cornwall finished in 25.94.
For Cornwall, this high school season has been a rough one.
“I got injured earlier this year,” she said. “I separated my shoulder in an accident for relay, but I feel better now.”
She and a teammate collided and tumbled during an exchange practicing for the 4x400m relay. Cornwall was a member of the Ross relay team that raced for a medal at the OFSAA provincial championship meet in Toronto last year.
The win in the 100m keeps Cornwall on track to achieve one of her goals for this season.
“I want to get to OFSAA for an individual race this year,” she said. “I haven’t done that at all. OFSAA West regionals are so hard, hopefully I can get there with the 100.”
Top five finishers in each final at the CWOSSA meet advance to next week’s OFSAA West regional meet at Windsor.
Hannah Pearsall of Lourdes was edged by Jenny Carrique of Kitchener Grand River in the junior girls’ 100m. Carrique won in 12.71 seconds while Pearsall was second at 12.74.
Brayden Miller of Brantford North Park won the midget boys’ 100m in 11.68 seconds while Andrew Zamin of St. James was second at 11.77. The top three finishers were all below the meet record.
Jermaine Stephenson of St. James took the junior boys’ 100m in 11.24 seconds while Morgan Walls of Brantford North Park was second at 11.27.
Charlie Sutton of Ross was involved in a close finish in the senior boys’ 400m hurdles. A strong run down the final stretch allowed him to pass a couple of rivals and come close to securing the victory. Calvin Arsenault of Kitchener St. Mary’s won in 57.35 seconds while Sutton was second at 57.78.
Shortly after the race while trying to catch his breath, Sutton though he had won.
“I think so, just because I have more natural 400m speed than him,” Sutton said. “”I do more training for that, so I think I got him at the end.
“When I came around the bend, it just felt great because the wind was at my back. I just flew past two guys because I was in the inside lane and then all the training, all the hours just paid off getting down there. It’s pretty good for my first senior year. All I wanted to do was to get to OFSAA West.”
Sutton competed at the OFSAA provincial meet as a junior last year, but he’s battled injuries since then.
“Last year, I had all these injuries and it was disappointing,” he said. “This year, I’ve put in a bunch of hours and it’s been paying off so far.
“I pulled my hamstring (during the club season) and I tried to get back into it for the soccer team I played for. I just kept coming back too early, there was too much times. I popped it about six or seven times.”
However, it hasn’t been a problem this year.
“It’s feeling great,” he said. “I’ve been doing all this stuff to try to keep it from seizing up again — all these stretches all the time. It’s been great.”
Helena Reinfels of Centennial was a three-time winner at the CWOSSA meet as she took the junior girls’ 400m, 80m hurdles and 300m hurdles.
Caleigh Smith of Lourdes was victorious in two events, the senior girls’ 1,500m and 3,000m.
Winners at the meet included:
Alison Fraser of Ross (midget girls’ 400m)
Paul Kealey of St. James (midget boys’ 800m),
Zamin (midget boys’ long jump)
Shayne Finoro of Lourdes (midget boys’ javelin)
Pearsall (junior girls’ 200m)
Vanessa Linton of Guelph CVI (junior girls’ 3,000m)
Danny Richards of Centennial (junior boys’ long jump)
Jane Brownlee of Lourdes (senior girls’ 400m)
Kim Cupid of Lourdes (senior girls’ long jump),
Katie Flemington of Centennial (senior girls’ triple jump)
Lindsay Thompson of Guelph CVI (girls’ 1,500m steeplechase)

Braeden Weppler of Wellington Heights (junior boys’ shot put)
Relay teams from Ross (senior girls’ 4x100m) and Lourdes (girls’ 4x400m).

Eagles Fly High; Take Girls and Overall Championship Plaques
The St. Mary's Eagles got a little bit of revenge at the home turf of their arch rivals, the Resurrection Phoenix.
The Eagles, who lost the D8 title to Rez a week earlier, took both the girls and overall titles over the two-day championship on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Eagles' girls racked up 119 points, while their men took home 98 points for a combined total of 217 --- which outdistanced second place Saugeen DSS (203). The Royals did take home the boys' title with 127 points.
Other Team Champions Included:
Resurrection CSS (Midget Girls)
Cameron Heights CI (Midget Boys)
Cameron Heights CI (Junior Girls)
Forest Heights CI (Junior Boys)
Our Lady of Lourdes (Senior Girls)
Saugeen DSS (Senior Boys)
Guelph CVI (Open Girls)
Bluevale CI (Open Boys)
The Top Individuals From Each Division Were:
Kelly Gribbons, Saugeen DSS (Midget Girls) - 28 points
Jordan Sherwood, Cameron Heights (Midget Boys) - 28 points
Helena Reinfels, Centennial (Junior Girls) - 30 points
Nienkel Paljola, Forest Heights (Junior Boys) - 30 points
Caleigh Smith, Lourdes (Senior Girls) - 26 points
Jordan Collision, Saugeen (Senior Boys) - 28 points (18 in senior + 10 in open Steeplechase)
Upon Further Review....
It would appear as though Elmira's Cory Giroux didn't actually set a record after all in the senior boys' long jump competition.
Giroux's 6.36m jump did indeed beat the "6.18" that was listed as the record. However, it appears that somewhere a record or two got lost in the shuffle.
In fact, if we just go back a couple of years (2008) --- Jake Pearsall (Lourdes) jumped 6.81m. In 2007, Bluevale's Jeremy Yang lept 6.79m.
Backtracking even further, we see on GRCI's record books a 7.21m jump from jumping star Kenen Shadd at the '01 CWOSSA championships. I would put money that Shadd's effort is probably the current CWOSSA record.
Then again, I could be wrong.
Records Fall on Day 2 at CWOSSA Championships
Some notable records, including some more than 30 years old, fell on the second day of the CWOSSA Track and Field Championships over at Resurrection CSS in Kitchener.
They included:
Nik Hoediono, SJAM (Junior Boys Pole Vault) - 4.12m. Previous Record: Dave Woodley, Eastwood CI - 4.09 in 1978.
Brooke Rowland, from Westside SS in Orangeville, took out a record in the junior girls' javelin that had stood since 1976. Her 43.33m toss eclipsed Debbie Smallwood (Eastwood)'s effort of 42.20m.
Meanwhile, Marielle Harper (KCI) took care of her own record in the open girls pole vault --- besting her 2009 3.00m effort by another 7cm (3.07).
Some Midget Records, which were recently reset, were also broken:
Tegan Sauer, Forest Heights (Midget Girls 100m) - 12.69. Previous Record: Hannah Pearsall, Lourdes - 13.03.
Breyden Miller, North Park CVS (Midget Boys 100m) - 11.55. Previous Record: Morgan Walls, North Park - 11.89. Miller also set a new mark in the midget 200m with a clocking of 23.92 (defeating Keegan Calder's 24.17 last year).
Bailey Sprout, Resurrection (Midget Girls 200m) - 26.42. Previous Record: Hannah Pearsall, Lourdes - 27.89.
Jaimie Phelan, St. Mary's (Midget Girls 800m) - 2:17.79. Previous Record: Aliya Roga, St. David - 2:27.63.
There were also a couple of impressive near-misses:
Braden Cok of SJAM nearly hit the 13-metre mark in the midget boys triple jump (12.99). This narrowly missed Rob Duffey (PJCVI)'s 1994 record of 13.08.
Meanwhile, Andrew Beckford (KCI)'s 17-year record of 42.00 in the 300m hurdles was nearly taken out by Cameron Heights' Jordan Sherwood, who clocked in at 42.35.

The Record: St. Mary's Runner Edges Elmira Runner in 1500m Thriller
By: Mark Bryson, Record Staff
KITCHENER — Ben Flanagan could feel the push coming.
He braced for it and pushed right back.
The St. Mary’s runner held off a charge by Elmira’s Matt Bannon to finish in first place on Wednesday in the midget boys 1,500-metre run. The entertaining race was one of many exciting happenings on the opening day of competition at the Central Western Ontario track and field championship at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.
“I’ve been racing with Ben since Grade 6 I think and he’s always been killing me so this year I’ve been trying to do my best to catch up with him,” said the diminutive Flanagan.
“I was definitely looking to win today.”
Flanagan and Bannon helped each other set records at last week’s combined Waterloo County-District 8 meet. Running in the 3,000-metre race, the two took turns leading the race until Flanagan put on a late burst for the win. Flanagan set a D8 record in the process, while Bannon beat the WCSSAA record. They both also set records over 1,500 metres and Flanagan set a record in the 2,000-metre steeplechase, an event he isn’t running at CWOSSA.
Both competitors earned a spot at next week’s Ontario West regional championship in Windsor, so Bannon wasn’t too broken up by the second-place finish.
“I was thinking about kicking on the far corner against Ben, but he pushed again and I thought it was a lost battle, so I just finished the race pretty much,” said Bannon of the move he aborted with about 200 metres to go.
Flanagan finished in a time of 4:22.72, while Bannon crossed in 4:23.89.
The two will square off again on Thursday in the 3,000-metre run.
Flanagan wasn’t the only member of the St. Mary’s Eagles to turn in a solid result. In fact, he wasn’t the only Flanagan to soar for the Eagles. Older sister Kristen qualified for OFSAA West in the senior girls 1,500-metre race and cousin Riley qualified in the midget boys long jump.
Of course, other Eagles made their mark, including Jaimie Phelan, who dominated the midget girls 1,500-metre race in a time of 4:39.66. Her nearest rival finished 21 seconds back.
“It’s not even a competition for her yet,” said Flanagan.
Calvin Arsenault of St. Mary’s blew away a strong field to take top spot in the senior boys 110-metre hurdles in a time of 14.42 seconds. Waterloo-Oxford’s Trevor Zister was second in 15.08, while Rez’s Marvin Muschette was third in 15.17.
It was a statement result for Arsenault, a Grade 11 student who competed at OFSAA last year as a high jumper, but dropped that event in favour of the sprint hurdles this past winter. He ran the long hurdles in 2009.
“I’m definitely surprised. I wasn’t enjoying (high jump) that much and hurdles were going really well so I just made the switch and it’s been working out.”
The hurdles provided much of the excitement, with a big shot of it coming from the junior boys 100-metre event.
Mitch O’Donnell of Forest Heights pulled the unlikely double of setting a long-standing CWOSSA record and finishing second. O’Donnell broke the 1993 mark of Galt’s Granville Riley in a qualifying run but hit a hurdle in the final, stumbled badly and finished behind Chris Green of Cameron Heights.
O’Donnell was well on his way to an easy win when he stumbled on the fourth-to-last hurdle. His morning time of 13.95 seconds beat Riley’s record of 14.00. Green won the final in 14.23.
It was also a thriller in the midget boys race as Aaron Stemmler of St. David edged Jordan Sherwood of Cameron Heights by .01 seconds.
The two-day event wraps up on Thursday.

Guelph Mercury: Thompson's Plan Right On Target
Article By: Rob Massey, Guelph Mercury
KITCHENER — Things worked out according to the plan for Lindsay Thompson of Guelph CVI on the first day of the CWOSSA high school track and field championships.
Thompson claimed victory in the open girls’ 1,500-metre steeplechase, finishing the event in five minutes and 21 seconds to beat second-placed Simone Tomasovic of Kitchener’s Cameron Heights by more than five seconds.
“My coach set up a game plan and I followed it and it worked out well,” Thompson said. “I don’t want to give away secrets, but it was to stick behind the lead pack for the first 800 metres, then lead my own lap and then just give it all I had at the end for the last 300 metres.”
In other words, she bided her time for the first two laps of the four-lap race, took control on the third lap and ran away with it after the water jump on the final lap.
“It was kind of scary, landing in the water,” Thompson said. “It slows your time down, but it went well.”
The race was the first of four events that the Grade 11 student will compete in at the zone championships. She also qualified in the 1,500m and 800m and as a member of GCVI’s 4x400m relay team.
“Making it to OFSAA,” is her goal for the year, she says. “I’ve made it to regionals every year, but not to OFSAA.”
Her best shot, she feels, will be in the steeplechase.
"I like them all,” she says of her track events. “I just like competing.”
During track’s off-season in the winter months, she feeds her competitive drive playing rep basketball in the Guelph Youth Basketball Association.
“We came second in provincials,” she said. “We were in the fourth division, though, but we got silver.”
Thompson will be joined at next week’s OFSAA West regional meet at Windsor by Sara Bowman of Ross who placed fourth in the steeplechase. Top five in each CWOSSA final advance to the regional meet.
Dan Caudle of St. James will be competing at Windsor in the open boys’ 2,000m steeplechase after he finished fifth at CWOSSA in a time of 6:54.08.
Jordan Collison of Saugeen District destroyed the field as he set a meet record in winning in 5:57.88. It’s the first time in the meet’s history that the winner has finished the event in less than six minutes. He was more than 32 seconds ahead of runner-up Jason Thornton of Jacob Hespeler.
The CWOSSA meet concludes today.

Rez Relay Squad Blasts Midget Girls Record
The Resurrection Phoenix midget girls' 4x100 relay squad obliterated a 21-year old record at the CWOSSA track and field championships on their home turf Wednesday evening.
The foursome of Kristen Dietrich, Kate Puersten, Bailey Sprout and Niki Paiva ran a blistering 50.64 clocking, which broke the existing CWOSSA record by over 1 second (51.80, Brantford North Park - 1989).
This time establishes Resurrection as an unquestionable favourite to medal at the upcoming OFSAA championships. Last year, Fletcher's Meadow from Brampton had a 50.15 clocking in the finals ---- and were the only school to go "sub 51" in the championships.
The interesting thing is that they may not be the only school that medals from our area at OFSAA. Their D8 rivals, the St. Mary's Eagles, ran a 51.59 time --- which ALSO was better than the previous CWOSSA record.
Another note --- Rez's 50.64 time was the second fastest of any girls relay team (all divisions) on Wednesday. The JF Ross senior girls (who were 5th at OFSAA last year) won that division in 50.46 seconds.
