Despite less than ideal conditions, four new records were established at the BAA track and field championships over the past couple of days in Kincardine ---- including one that had stood for over twenty years. One of those four records, however, didn't actually "beat" the old mark. Confused? Read on.....
Firstly, the "20 year old record" that was broken took place in the midget boys 100m sprint. The 11.40 mark established by Ian Galloway in 1989 was bested by John Diefenbaker's Robert Protomanni in the semifinals (yes, semifinals). His 11.05 was the top time on the day, though he finished 3rd in the finals with a 12.0 clocking.
Two hurdle records also fell over the course of the championships. Rita Rudell of Peninsula Shores put home a 13.60 clocking in the 100m hurdles (Senior Girls), beating her 2008 record of 14.84.
Jayce Dunlop (Saugeen) also beat a record in the hurdles, setting the new mark in the 100m junior boys hurdles at 14.57. This mark was a little over 2/10s better than the 14.80 clocking by Saugeen's Chris Lootsma in 2004.
Meanwhile, Saugeen's Jordan Collison ran a 6:17.6 in the 2000m Steeplechase. Though the mark was technically not as good as the 6:07.3 run by OSCVI's Shawn Mills in 1991, that race was contested without a water jump. As such, Collison's mark will stand as the new record going forward.
