Here's a quick run down of some potential record breakers and ones to watch in the D8 side of the WCSSAA/D8 meet today:
1. Resurrection's Midget Girls 100m and 4x100 Runners
This could be a huge point haul for RCSS --- they had four runners (Bailey Sprout, Niki Paiva, Kristen Dietrich and Michelle Kostka) make the finals of the Trackwars 2010 100 metres ---- meaning they all finished among the top 16 of about 120 sprinters that day.
Their 51.83 clocking in the midget relay would have won both the junior and senior classes that day ---- so that tells you the kind of speed we're dealing with here. I look for Rez to pile up some serious points in the sprints ---- St. Mary's might be able to prevent a clean sweep of the top 3 or 4 spots, but they're in tough.
2. Tia Semplonius' Assault on the Record Books
The 5th year St. Benedict sprinter currently holds 5 individual D8 records ---- midget 100, junior 100 & 200, and senior 100 & 200. Look for her to take aim at her 12.66 100m clocking and her 25.98 200m clocking if the conditions are right over the next 2 days.
3. Aliya Roga
The diminutive runner set a couple of records last year in the midget age category, and has a change to knock Rez's Adrienne Wilson (who now runs NCAA D1 at Utah) out of the books if she can best a 5:03.47 clocking. Definitely something to keep an eye on.
4. Scott Buttinger
The latest member of the Buttinger clan to come through RCSS was an OFSAA participant last year in the 800, and looking to make it back there again. He clocked in around 2:08 at TrackWars, which is just a couple of seconds off of Connor Outhit's 2006 D8 record.
5. St. Mary's Middle Distance Runners
Sam Baxter (Junior 1500) should obliterate Drew Jansen's 2005 record of 4:27 in this event ---- he clocked in at 4:14.99 earlier this year. Actually, the 1500 looks like it may be a promising event for the Eagles; Ben Flanagan (Midget Boys 1500) and Katie Phelan (Senior Girls 1500) were also winners at the TrackWars classic.
6. Breanne Hutchings
The Doyle thrower has a great opportunity to sweep her throwing events this year, even though she has moved up to the junior category. The javelin is her best event; she set the D8 midget record last year with a toss of 28.25m.
7. Marvin Muschette
The RCSS jumper and hurdler has something to prove ---- especially after having fouled out of last year's triple jump competition at OFSAA West Regionals last year despite being the prohibitive favourite. Keep an eye on him as he begins his quest to return to the OFSAA ranks this year.
