Guelph Mercury: Flemington Pulls Off A Triple Feat to Advance to Regionals

By:  Rob Massey, Guelph Mercury

GUELPH — It was a bit of a rush for Centennial’s Katie Flemington on the second and final day of the District 4/10 high school track and field championship meet.

All the scurrying, however, was worth it on Thursday as she managed to advance in three events to next week’s CWOSSA championship meet at Kitchener.

Flemington and fellow senior girls’ long jump competitor Kim Cupid of Lourdes didn’t have time to stand around and talk about their one-two finish as both had to immediately run in the 100 metres final. There wasn’t even time to change shoes.

“It’s kinda good because I’m warmed up from long jump, but I didn’t get to change my spikes,” Flemington said. “They’re a little heavier.”

In the 100m, Flemington finished third in 14.06 seconds. Karry-Ann Cornwall of Ross won in 13.00 while Alicia Hogins of Centennial was second in 13.92 and Cupid was fourth in 14.32. Top four in each event qualified for the CWOSSA meet.

“With the weather and everything, it’s a little hard,” Flemington said on the rainy afternoon that featured a half-hour pause for lightning in the area. “You just want to move on and you don’t want to get injured for the rest of them because each step there’s more competition.”

She also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 10.97 metres. Amber Rae of Orangeville won at 11.06m.

“My triple jump wasn’t as good today,” Flemington said. “I qualified through, but I had to do five (triple jumps) in a row because I had the 100 heats—as long as I get through.”

Flemington has been focusing on her jumping this year after being a challenger in the long jump last year when she made it as far as the OFSAA West Regionals.

“It’s really getting better and I’m happy about that,” she said. “Last year, I was a bit injured, but I’m feeling good right now. I’ve switched coaches and he’s really amazing, he’s really helping me.”

Flemington has recently started working with Yanish Tomko of Waterloo as her coach. That has also brought about another change as she’s now competing as an unattached athlete instead of with the Guelph Track and Field Club.

“I’ve only been jumping with him for two weeks now, but it’s improved a lot.”

She’s also muscled up a bit since last year, thanks to her weight training.

“I lift twice a week. That’s another part of (Tomko’s) program. We do active lifting, like jumping with weights on and weights on your wrists and weights on your legs and things like that when you’re running. It really helps with your speed power.”

And it has helped with her results, too.

“It seems that each meet I’m improving, which is what I’m looking for. It’s the opposite of last year. I’m excited.”

Lourdes took both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the meet.

The Crusaders collected 355.5 points in the boys’ events to easily take the team title. Ross was second at 197.5 while St. James was third at 165.

Lourdes won the girls’ team title with 264.5 points while Ross was second at 246.5 and Guelph CVI was third at 183.2.
